Dorothy (Betty) Demharter unexpectedly passed away at home on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. Born in Akron, Ohio, Betty was a life-long resident of Canal Fulton, graduating from Canal Fulton High School in 1945. After High School, Betty attended Nurses Training at Akron City Hospital. On February 14, 1948, Betty married William C. (Bill) Demharter and together they celebrated 52 years of marriage. Until her death, Betty had enjoyed an active retirement following 25 years as a Registered Nurse, retiring as Superintendent of Massillon State Hospital. In retirement, she devoted time to her friends and family, including attending Sts. Phillips and James Catholic Church, being a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, and participating in activities at the Northwest Stark Senior Citizens’ Center. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She was also pre-deceased by their son, William Michael (Mike) Demharter. She is survived by her daughters, Sharon (Roger) Dieringer and Cindy (Dan) Birdashaw; grandchildren, Heather (Jason) Provost, Whitney (Brian) Godwin, Jason (Lauren) Dieringer, Amie Stepanovich and Nic Stepanovich; six wonderful great-grandchildren; and long-time dear family friend George (Patsy) Hopkins. Dorothy also leaves many close friends around Canal Fulton and the surrounding communities. She will be deeply missed. Visiting hours will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM on FRIDAY, September 22, at Swigart-Easterling Funeral Home, 624 E. Cherry St. (Rt. 93) Canal Fulton. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, September 23, at 10:00 AM at SS. Phillip and James Catholic Church, 412 High St. N. Graveside services will follow at Canal Fulton Cemetery.
