Laura A. Higgins, 62 of Lawrence Twp. passed away Saturday, December 21, 2019. Born on April 1, 1957 in Barberton to the late Stanley and Gloria (Maddox) Higgins, she had been an area resident all of her life. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and a supporter of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, the ASPCA, and Special Olympics. Laura was active in Girl Scouts and also a member of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Nature Conservancy and the World Wildlife Organization. She enjoyed baking, cooking, Sudoku and swimming. Laura loved all animals, especially her cats and dogs. While growing up on the family farm, Laura raised and named all of the replacement heifers for the dairy herd. She milked the cows and helped plant and harvest the crops. As an adult, she continued to help on the farm, doing whatever needed to be done. She loved planting flowers, trees and a garden. She kept the freezers of friends and family members filled with fruits and vegetables. Locally, Laura was known for her Halloween pumpkins and baked goods. She sold breads, cakes and cookies from Aunt Joey's kitchen, so named because her young niece found it easier to pronounce "Aunt Joey" instead of Aunt Laurie. Laura attended Stark State College, where she excelled in her studies. She worked in the fields of accounting, computing and logistics. She was most recently employed at B & R and Secrest Transportation. She was a good hearted person always willing to help anyone in need. She always left everyone smiling and will be deeply missed by many family, friends and feline friends; Samantha, Sassy and Simba. Laura is survived by her sisters, Mary Anne Higgins and Carol (Terry) Saunders; niece, Jacqueline (Michael) Hawk; great-nieces, Rowyn and Mayci. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. John Lutheran Church or adopting a homeless animal. A Celebration of Life Service for Laura will be held at Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 11 a.m. at St John Lutheran Church, 336 West Market St. Canal Fulton, with Pastor Cindy Striker officiating. After the service, please join the family in the Fellowship Hall to share a meal and your fondest memories of Laura Higgins.
