Obituary

Duane Louis Smith was born July 5, 1931 to Mainard and Ruth Ross Smith. He was baptized at Holy Trinity Church in Akron and later became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Clinton when he married his wife, Phyllis Campbell. Duane attended Springfield Township Schools and graduated from the University of Akron in 1954, earning a B. S. in Music Education. That same year, he received a 2nd Lt. Commission in the United States Air Force. He then entered pilot training and earned his wings in 1955. Duane served four years in the USAF Pilot Training Command Flying B-25's. He began his civilian career as an air traffic controller and then became a corporate pilot until his retirement in 1991. He was a proud member of the Quiet Birdmen (QB's). Duane is survived by his wife of 57 years, Phyllis (Campbell) Smith and his three children: Michael (Mary) Smith, Scott (Lea Ann) Smith and Jessica Smith-Senior. As well as his grandchildren: Jennifer (Alfredo) Smith-Garcia, Michelle Smith, Andrew Senior, Philip (Jessica) Senior, Alec Senior, Nicholas Smith and Matthew Smith. Duane was also blessed to have two wonderful great granddaughters, Isabella Garcia and Paige Senior. Also survived by his two brothers, Ross Smith and Starley (Connie) Smith and his sister-in-law, Ann Campbell. As well as many nieces and nephews: Linda, Rick, Jodi, Jamie, Regan, Carrie, Pam, Kim, and Nancy. Duane left behind many wonderful friends, whom he greatly loved and admired. A Memorial Service will be conducted on THURSDAY, MAY 5, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church 7595 Middle Street, Clinton, OH 44216 with Pastor Julie Thoms officiating. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
