Obituary


Elsie M. Schroeder, 97, passed away peacefully at her home, Sat. May 12, 2012. She was born April 14, 1915 to Mary (Weckesser) and Edward Krites. She grew up in the North Lawrence area. As a child, she attended school in a horse drawn wagon. She graduated from Washington High School in 1933. As a young woman, she played softball with the "Sheak's Ten". She was a reporter for the Evening Independent going from house to house collecting news from the Urban Hill area. She married Elmer H. Schroeder in 1935. He preceded her in death in 1990. She worked with her husband in the cement block business in Canal Fulton and Orrville, and in Dalton as the Gulf Oil distributor. She retired as a receptionist from the Apple Creek Developmental Center, working there from 1963-1979. Elsie was a Hospice volunteer for 10 years and was active in the Northwest Stark Senior Center and the Hill and Hollow Garden Club. She was a lifetime member of the Canal Fulton Heritage Society. Elsie was generous and donated money to community groups such as the police and fire departments, the library, schools and St. John's Lutheran Church. She liked to visit and financially contribute to the Barberton Seventh Day Adventist Mission. Her motto was: " What you do for others stays here on earth; what you do for yourself goes with you." In 2008, she was named Citizen of the Year by the Canal Fulton Firefighters Association. She was a member of the Victory Bible Church in Canal Fulton. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Art, Emerson, twins, William and Walter, Ralph and sisters, Evelyn Rupp and Florence Nusbaum. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann (Vern) King of Dalton: son, Timothy (Deborah) Schroeder of Herndon, Virginia along with 3 grandchildren, 7 great, grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends. She will be remembered as a caring, loving person who wanted to maintain her independence and activities until the end, which she was able to do. Funeral Service THURSDAY, 11:00 a.m. at the Swigart-Easterling Funeral Home, 624 E. Cherry St. (Rt. 93, Canal Fulton). Burial Canal Fulton Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home WEDNESDAY, 5-8 pm and Thursday one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
