Florence Martha
Petersen
September 22, 1928 – May 23, 2026
Florence Martha Petersen, 97, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, warmth, and devotion to her family and friends.
Born on September 22, 1928, in Cleveland, Ohio, Florence was the daughter of Waldo Emerson Cross and Francis Teresa Xavier Cross. She grew up with her siblings Jack Cross, Bob Cross, Junie Cross, and Peggy (Cross) Lones, and graduated from Canton Lincoln High School, Class of 1946.
Florence was the beloved wife of Robert E. Petersen, who preceded her in death. The two eloped to Florence, Kentucky, in 1947, beginning a life together centered on family, hard work, and shared adventure.
She was a loving mother to Linda Reichardt (deceased), Lorrie Santos, Greg Santos, Robert “Bob” Petersen, and Judy C. Jessen-Petersen. She was also a proud grandmother to Bethany Santos, Ryan Santos, Mitch Petersen, and Dennis and Kevin Reichardt, and a cherished great-grandmother to Amrita “Amma” Santos-Pellegrene, daughter of Bethany, who lovingly called her “Gigi.”
Known to many as “Flo,” she had a warm, spirited personality that made people feel instantly welcome. She was a talented seamstress and also worked at Kobacher’s Department Store in downtown Canton, Ohio. Her creativity and eye for detail were reflected in the many things she loved-her artwork, sewing, crafts, gardening, and bird watching. She was especially proud of her paintings of birds, flowers, and landscapes, as well as growing African violets competitively, a hobby that brought her both joy and recognition.
After retirement, Flo and Bob spent summers in Loudonville, Ohio, and traveled the country by motorhome during the winters, embracing adventure and creating lasting memories together. They later made their home in Bushnell, Florida. Following the passing of her husband, Florence returned to Canal Fulton, Ohio, to be closer to her family. For the last four years of her life, she resided at Rose Lane Rehab and Nursing in Massillon, Ohio, where she was cared for with kindness and compassion.
Florence will be remembered most for her love of family, her gentle strength, and the care she gave to those around her. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose presence brought comfort and joy to so many.
Her memory will be treasured always by those who knew and loved her.
Per her wishes private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
