Obituary


George Elwood Cheney, 89 of Chapel Hill Community in Canal Fulton died of natural causes on Wednesday, September 21, 2011.He was born July 12, 1922 in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Massillon, was a graduate of Massillon Washington High School and served in the U S Navy during World War II in the Pacific. He earned a B. S. degree in Electrical Engineering and took advanced business courses at Ohio University and Cleveland State University. He spent his career with Ohio Edison, now First Energy, working in a variety of managerial positions. He was a faithful member of parish communities in Youngstown, Akron, Mansfield, North Canton and Canal Fulton. In 1954 he and Mary Alice (Seevers) Cheney were married and they had 57 years together. George was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Edward and Mary Genevieve (Murphy) Cheney; his sister, Dolores (Cheney) Maier. He is survived by his wife, Mary; his son, George Edward and daughter-in-law, Sally; several nieces and nephews, including Michael and Sharon Burns of Canton, with whom he was especially close. Mass of the Christian Burial SATURDAY, 11:00 a.m. at SS Philip & James Catholic Church, 412 N. High Street, Canal Fulton. Private burial at North Lawn Cemetery, Canton. Family will receive friends SATURDAY from 10:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the Swigart-Easterling Funeral Home, 624 E. Cherry St. (Rt. 93, Canal Fulton) with a brief prayer service prior to mass. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to Maryknoll Brothers or to a charity of their choice.
