Obituary

George H. Venables, 78 of Canal Fulton, died Monday, January 4, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center following a long battle with COPD. He was born on March 23, 1937 in North Lawrence to the late Homer and Jeanette Venables and has made Canal Fulton his home for the past 50 plus years. He was a graduate of Massillon Washington High School, served his country proudly in the United States Army in Korea, was a member of the Canal Fulton VFW Post 9795 and retired from the Northwest Local School District. He served on the Canal Fulton Fire Department for many years and was the fire chief from 1979-1984. He was instrumental in developing the first ambulance service and EMS/Paramedic service for Canal Fulton during his tenure on the fire department. George is survived by his wife of 56 years Janet (Johnson) Venables, along with daughters, Barbara (Louis) Yingling and Patty (Rick) Stroh; grandchildren Travis (Rachael) Stroh, Tyler and Mayson Stroh (his princess) and faithful dog "Lady". George was preceded in death by a son, Larry Alan; brothers Homer, Dick, and Bob Venables and sister Norma Handwerk-Buchwalter. Last Alarm Service will be held FRIDAY, 1:00pm, at the Swigart-Easterling Funeral Home, 624 E. Cherry St. (Rt. 93) Canal Fulton, followed by a Funeral Service conducted by Pastor Julie Thoms, with Military Honors by VFW 9795. Visitation THURSDAY, 4pm to 7pm at the funeral home. Final Resting Place Newmans Creek Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Mercy Development Foundation for Nursing Education, Canal Fulton VFW 9795 or the Canal Fulton Fire Department.
