Herman Ausprung

On August 7, 2026, the world lost a generous and kind soul.

Herm was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in January 1943 to his loving parents, Harry and Loretta. The oldest of four children, he was a devoted big brother and remained deeply connected to his brother and sisters throughout his life.

A proud Ohioan through and through, Herm was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes football fan and could often be counted on as a one-person spokesman for the greatness of Ohio. He called Canal Fulton home for more than 50 years and deeply loved the town and his home.

A proud veteran, Herm served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, and then spent 30 years as a Pricing Manager at B&W in Barberton, Ohio. Hard work and a deep sense of duty were central to who he was, but family and the people he loved always came first.

Herm was preceded in death in 2016 by his wife, Karen. During Karen’s long battle with multiple sclerosis, he was a devoted caregiver whose unwavering commitment allowed her to live out her days at home. Their life together was a testament to the depth of his loyalty and the strength of his heart.

An incredible father, Herm was adored by his two daughters, Kathy and Becky. He supported and encouraged them to be more than they ever thought possible, always believing in them and pushing them to believe in themselves. They give him tremendous credit for their successes in life, and his love and guidance will remain with them always.

Herm loved his brother and sisters, Al and his wife Bessie, Jandy—whom he affectionately nicknamed “Gootsie”—and Marcy. Family was never something he took for granted, and the closeness he shared with them was a source of joy.

Herm’s daughter Kathy and her husband John, and his daughter Becky and her husband Brian, gave him four grandchildren of whom he was incredibly proud: Kari (Lauryn) and her spouse, Alix; Julie; Alek; and Liam. He treasured each of them and took genuine delight in watching them grow, cheering them on, and knowing the people they were becoming.

Generous by nature, Herm quietly donated to numerous charities. He was profoundly grateful for the opportunity to help others and believed that when you were fortunate enough to have something to give, you should give it.

Herm will be remembered for his sharp mind, quick wit, fierce love of family, unwavering Ohio pride, and the countless ways he made a difference in the lives of those around him. His absence will be deeply felt by all who loved him.

He leaves behind family and friends who will carry his memory forward with love and gratitude—and, very likely, a continued appreciation for the Ohio State Buckeyes and the greatness of Ohio.

Military funeral services for Herm and his late wife Karen will be held at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery on Friday, September 25, 2026, at 2:45 p.m. The National Cemetery requires that guests arrive no later than 2:30 p.m. Staff or signs at the entrance will direct your vehicle to the proper committal shelter for the service. Following the service, you are invited for a dinner and celebration of life at the Canal Grille, 2223 Locust Street in Canal Fulton.
