John Landis Rice, 77, of Doylestown, Ohio, died on July 13, 2026. Born on August 4, 1948, in Canton, Ohio to the late Michel G. and Ruth (Bristley) Rice. He moved with his family to Akron in 1952 where he graduated from Buchtel High School, Class of 1966. Following graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corp and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He enjoyed playing golf, serving as umpire to Little League games, and with his 'sidekick' Benny, visited patients at Children's Hospital every Sunday for many years through the Doggie Brigade. He was a Support Manager at WalMart, Wadsworth with 21 years of service. John was a member of Doylestown United Methodist Church.
John was a dedicated and caring husband to the love of his life, Bonnie E. Wiesen. Married on May 21, 1983, they just celebrated their 43rd anniversary.
In addition to his parents, John was pre-deceased by his sister, Elaine Kay and brother, Wayne Melvin. He is survived by his brother, The Rev. Dr. David Rice (Akron) and his sister, Janet (Rice) Miller (Sandusky); sisters-in-law, Carrie and Tammy Wiesen (Jackson Twp.); nephew, Nate Allen Smith (Jackson Twp).; and many more nieces and nephews and their spouses.
Service of Committal will take place on Thursday, July 23, 2026, 2:15 p.m. at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Seville, Ohio. Please meet at the cemetery by 2:00 p.m.
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection and Thanksgiving for John's Life at Doylestown United Methodist Church, will be scheduled at a future date.
