Obituary

Lucy Mae Sumor passed away August 11, 2014 at the age of 82. She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) Sumor in 1994 and is survived by her sister Jean Gilham of Carrolton and her three daughters: Susan Lenhart of Massillon, Beth Sumor of Canton and Amy Sumor of Laurel, Maryland. She also leaves behind three grandchildren: Jessica (Lenhart) Drennen of Massillon, Landon Sumor of Canton, Seamus Sumor of Laurel, Maryland and Lakeisha Taylor. Lucy grew up in Barberton and raised her family in Canal Fulton, where she quickly became a centerpiece of the town through her service at the Canal Fulton Chamber of Commerce. An active parishioner at SS. Philip and James parish, Lucy established and facilitated many charitable programs for the community, particularly helping those in economic need. She will be remembered fondly in Canal Fulton for her generous spirit, her energetic demeanor, and her vibrant presence at the apple fritter booth at Yankee Peddler and the duck pond at the Olde Canal Days Festival. If you didn't know Lucy from Canal Fulton, you surely did from the Massillon AAA where she was Deputy Registrar for 12 years. At one point, you probably got your license from Lucy at the Ful-Dres License Bureau, the business she and her husband opened in 1989 and from which she retired in 1999. Lucy loved to travel, especially by sea! She enjoyed 27 cruises including a few transatlantic journeys. After being a snowbird for a few years, she moved permanently to Fort Myers, Florida in 2002. Always active, Lucy enjoyed 9 years of pinochle, golf carts, dances, creative writing club, red hat society, and parties. She was a member of the Buckeye Club and served as Treasurer of the Jamaica Bay Residents' Council. In 2011, Lucy's health began to deteriorate and she moved to Maryland with her daughter, Amy. Slowly she began to fail more consistently and decided to move home to Ohio. Lucy spent her final year at the Laurels of Massillon surrounded by family and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held SATURDAY, August 16, 2014, 10am at SS. Philip and James Catholic Church, 412 N. High St., Canal Fulton, Fr. Kevin McCaffrey celebrant. Burial at Church Cemetery. Family and Friends may call FRIDAY, 5pm to 8pm at the Swigart-Easterling Funeral Home, 624 E. Cherry St. (Rt 93) Canal Fulton. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to SS Philip and James Catholic Church School.
