Mary W. Martin, 89, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 9, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on November 12, 1936, in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Claire and Mary (Phillippi) French.
Mary dedicated her life to caring for others, serving faithfully as a registered nurse for 45 years. She began her nursing career at Jameson Memorial Hospital in Pennsylvania and retired from Aultman Hospital in Ohio 2002. Nursing was more than a profession to Mary—it was a reflection of her compassionate heart, gentle spirit, and unwavering dedication to helping those in need. She will always be remembered by family and friends for her kindness, loving personality, caring nature, and sweet smile.
Family was the center of Mary’s life and greatest joy. She treasured every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved traveling to the beach and mountains, enjoying the beauty of nature and the outdoors. Mary also had a special gift for sewing, quilting, and crocheting. Known as the seamstress of the family, she lovingly created dresses and handmade treasures for generations of loved ones, stitching her love into every piece she made. Her warmth, creativity, and nurturing spirit touched everyone fortunate enough to know her.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Martin, and her brothers, Eugene, Carl, Norman, and Harold French.
She leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory: her daughters, Joni Johnson Fowler and Mary Beth (Robert) Hutcheson; grandchildren, Tiffiny(Wes) Johnson Townsend, Jessica (David) Gross, Matthew (Chandra) Piatt, Jackie (John) Majovsky, Deanna (Steven) Fowler, Joshua Martin Fowler, Robert (Cherolet) Hutcheson, Amy Belling, and Heather (James) Hutcheson; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Garrett Townsend, Aubriella and Naomi Gross, John Roger, Liliana and Thomas Majovsky, Bryson and Savannah Mabe, Bryant Woods; twin sisters, Leona Walker and Devona French; brother, Tom French; caretaker Sarah Smart; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Community Christian Church, 210 N. Main Street, North Canton, with her granddaughter, Jacklyn Piatt, officiating. Family and friends may visit from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the church. The family kindly requests that all attending wear something pink in memory of their sweet “Pinkie.” Entombment will follow at Sunset Hills Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dementia Society of America.
