Richard Ernest "Dick" Elvin Age 71, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011, at Affinity Medical Center in Massillon with his family by his side. Richard was born May 18, 1940 in Elwood, IN, the son of the late Ernest and Florence Elvin. He grew up in Tipton and Kokomo, IN and graduated from Danielson High School in Connecticut in 1958.
Richard held a degree in ceramic engineering from Alfred University in New York. He also received an ROTC Distinguished Military Graduate Award. He served as 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army from 1963-1965, and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service as company commander of the 378th Ordnance Co. in Ft. Irwin, CA.
Richard worked as a ceramic engineer at American Standard, Ohio Brass, and Diamonite Products, where he achieved excellence as a Quality Control Manager. He later worked in retirement planning for Met Life Insurance Company in Western PA, where he received frequent recognition as part of the National Leaders Conference.
Richard and his family resided in NE Ohio for over 30 years, where he was active in his community and church, including service as Founder of the NW-Jackson Youth Soccer League, President of the Northwest HS Booster League, Trustee on the Board of the Ohio Veterans' Memorial Park and member of Rotary International. He was a longtime parishioner, lay leader, and choir member of Canal Fulton United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife Karen (Stuebe) Elvin to whom he was married for nearly 47 years; daughters Anne Marie, Kristi, and Kathi; son Jon; and 7 grandchildren: Tyler, Amber, Jonathan, Kailin, Karli, Lexi, and Brigitte. He was preceded in death by his sister, Julia Marie Davis.
Richard is remembered for his sense of humor, dedication to community, and love of family.
