Shirley A. (Hoover) Best, 91 of Ashtabula, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at her home surrounded by family. She was born August 14, 1927 in Ashtabula to the late Frank and Florence (Lystrom) Hoover and graduated from Ashtabula High School Class of '46. Shirley married James Best on June 12, 1947 and shared 57 years of marriage together before his passing on July 19, 2004. Shirley was a floor manager for Woolworths five and dime for many years and retired as an educational aide from Ridgeview Elementary in 1989 after 18 years of service. She was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a deacon. Most recently she attended Trinity Presbyterian Church and was active in the Thursday's Ladies Prayer Group. Shirley was a Cub Scout Den Mother, past member of the Edgewood Athletic Boosters Club and the Ashtabula Senior Center. Shirley enjoyed her time spent with the Class of '46 monthly breakfast group, was an avid craft maker and a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Indians. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by brothers, Ralph, Frank Jr. and James Hoover; sisters, Barbara Hoover, Evelyn Kellogg, Margaret McGraw, Eleanor Fagerstrom, Lucille Maille, Charlotte Burkhardt, Helen Hoover and Juanita Clapper. Shirley is survived by her children; Edward (Ruth) Best, David Best, Barbara (Joe Cross) Dunn, Bradley (Bobbie) Best; and Carl (Kim) Best; grandchildren; Jackie (Victor) Cardona, Craig (Melissa) Dunn, Derek (Heather) Best, Erin (Jeff) Rix, Chris (Stacey) Best, Melanie (Ryan) Iden, Bradley (Nicole) Best, Gregory (Marie) Best, and Stephen (Ashley) Best; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Carl (Marie) Hoover, Sr.; sisters, Joyce Hill and Judy (Dale) Dodd. Funeral Services will be held MONDAY, June 10, 2019, 1:00PM at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors and Crematory, 526 W. Prospect Rd., Ashtabula with Rev. Mark Mong officiating. Burial at Greenlawn Memory Gardens. Calling Hours will be held Monday from 11AM-1 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Shirley's name can be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church 1342 W. Prospect Rd., Ashtabula, OH 44004.
