Stephen G. Smith, 1947-2017, age 69, passed away peacefully at home under hospice care on Jan. 19. He was born in Akron, OH to parents June and Burtney Smith and moved to Canal Fulton when he was 13 yrs old. Steve was a member of the Northwest High School Class of 1965. He graduated from the University of Akron with a B.A. in education in 1969 with a major in History and Government grades 7-12. Following college he served as an active duty Quarter Master Officer in the U.S. Army for 4 years and many years in the Army Reserve, attaining the rank of Major.
He worked in a variety of fields, for many years in the trucking industry as a dispatcher. Over the years he also acquired a real estate license and paralegal degree. He spent the last 13 years before retirement as a full time substitute teacher for Stark County Schools spending the majority of his time at Tuslaw School District.
Steve loved fishing, outdoor activities and projects on our farm including beekeeping and Airedale Terriers. He was a longtime member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Massillon, where he was very active in choir, Sunday School, and held various offices while serving on the Vestry. He was also a member of the Canal Fulton VFW Post #9795, the Stark County Beekeepers Club and when his sons were teenagers, worked closely with Boy Scout Troop 915.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and numerous aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carol Sisler Smith; sons, Charles and Matthew Smith; sister, Christine (Michael) Streb; nephews, Patrick and Mike (Julie); niece, Katherine Streb, many cousins, friends and loyal Airedale companion, Maggie.
Funeral Services will be held FRIDAY, 11:00am, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 226 Third St SE, Massillon, Fr. George Baum officiating. Burial with military honors conducted by Canal Fulton VFW #9795 at Canal Fulton Cemetery. Calling Hours Thursday, 5pm to 7pm at the Swigart-Easterling Funeral Home, 624 Cherry St. East (Rt. 93) Canal Fulton and also one hour prior to service time at the church. Flowers are welcome as are memorial donations to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 226 Third St. SE, Massillon, OH 44646.
