Obituary

Theodore (Ted) Cruse was born in Ohio on December 18, 1922. Like all young men, Ted had dreams of an exciting career. His hopes of medical school, or being a pilot were hindered by his vision. However, he volunteered for the Navy during World War II and served as a Naval pharmacist mate, assisting in surgical operations. Ted went on to earn a BA in chemistry at his beloved alma mater, Ohio Wesleyan University, as did his beloved wife, Peg, who preceded him in death. Ted continued his education at Kansas State University, earning a master's degree in Chemistry. Ted's career led him to work for the Cleveland Clinic, as well as Sherwin Williams Paints, where he helped to develop various paints and varnishes. All who knew him knew how much he and Peg enjoyed antiquing. Ted especially loved not only the thrill of the hunt, but the process of restoring items to their original splendor. At last count, there were at least eight chests, three cupboards with glass fronts and four poster beds in his home --- all lovingly refinished and restored by Ted ! Ted was a great storyteller, and shared with all his memories of being the quarterback for the Ohio Wesleyan football team. It somehow just seems right that Ted had this leadership role, and his passion for football and his alma mater remained with him always. Ted became a member of First Christian Church of Downers Grove on September 16, 1973, serving in various leadership roles. He was a devoted elder and was proud to be named an elder emeritus in the Church. He also sang in the choir, worked around the church building, and was a faithful supporter of church ministries. FCCDG's own "Dapper Dan" was well known for his snappy style of dress. He always wore a tie, even under a t-shirt while working at our back-to-school fair ! Aramis was his signature scent, and his eyes would light up when you gave him a compliment. Ted was a person of passion, purpose and joy. He loved his wife, Peg, dearly, and was very proud of his daughter, Ann, and son, Ted II. In addition to his daughter and son,, Ted leaves three grandchildren, Amanda, Jake and Jessie, to hold his memory dear. One of his favorite sayings was: "If I knew I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself." He made his goal of reaching his 90th birthday. His life left us all with great memories of good times, laughter and fun. Well done, good and faithful servant. . . we will miss you!
