William "Bill" Kusmits, 52 of Canal Fulton, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2024. Born December 8, 1971; he was a 1990 graduate of Northwest High School, where he excelled in football and wrestling and was inducted into the Northwest Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2009. Bill graduated from the University of Akron in 2000 with a degree in Civil Engineering and worked as an engineer for Marathon Petroleum for the past 17 years. While employed at Marathon he was a member of the Marathon Canton Fire Rescue Department. Bill was also a board member of the Showers Foundation.
Bill was a great cook and enjoyed cooking for family and friends. He was an avid golfer and cherished his hole-in-one. Bill also loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing trips to Canada, and gardening. He was involved with the bow club, ski club and took 1st place at the United Way Sporting Clay Event in 2022 and 2023.
He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Jamie Showers and great-nephew, Henry O'Neil. Bill is survived by his wife, Tracy (Showers) Kusmits; children, Jeremy Johnson, Casey (Jill) Johnson and Mikayla (Joel) Runnells; grandchildren, Taylor, Natalie, Lizzie and was excited about the birth of his grandson in August 2024; special great-nephew, Bennett, who was like a grandchild; parents, Tom and Patricia Kusmits; siblings, Tammy (George) Johnson, John (Kim) Kusmits and Julie (Todd) Farley; father and mother-law, Dave and Martha Showers; sister-in-law, Michelle (Scott) Riffle; nieces and nephews, Billy (Emma) Johnson, Jimmy (Becky) Johnson, Joey (Noel) Johnson, Katie Johnson, Jeff (Morgan) Kusmits, Jacki (Matt) Hines, Josh (Tessa) Kusmits, Tory (Rob) Burns, Taylor Farley, Andrew (Liz) Martina, Frankie (Zak) Martina, Brittany (Dylan) Harris, Emily (Jon) O'Neil, Anna (Gage) Martina, Charleigh Riffle and numerous great-nieces, great-nephews and extended family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held FRIDAY, April 5, 2024, 11:00am at SS Philip and James Catholic Church, 412 High St. NE, Canal Fulton, Fr. Thomas Cebula celebrant. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, Akron. Calling Hours THURSDAY, April 4, 2024, 4pm to 8pm at the Swigart-Easterling Funeral Home, 624 Cherry St. E. (Rt. 93) Canal Fulton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill's name can be made to the Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders, 1 Perkins Square, Akron, OH 44308.
