Obituary

William C. Slaven, 84, is now "...absent from the body, present with the Lord" (II Cor. 5:6-8). Born in Cass, West Virginia, he was the sixth child of John and Eleanor (Davis) Slaven. Bill, (aka "Wild Bill" and "The Mayor of Manchester"), moved to the Akron area in the 1950's, making Manchester his home in 1957. He was employed as a machinist at McNeil Akron and retired from Akron Tool and Die. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: Johnny Slaven, Norma Meeks, Earl Slaven, Helen Davis and Naomi Arrington. One of "Wild Bill's" endearing qualities was his ability to make people feel welcome in any situation. He didn't know a stranger. He pursued his favorite pastime, FLIRTING, right up to the end by winking at the female aides who took care of him before breathing his last breath. Although, he was a flirt, his heart belonged to his True Love, Elva Estep Slaven. They were married September 19, 1952. In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his children: Gary W. Slaven and Bonnie (Brett) Kline; grandchildren; Stacia Kline, Treston Kline and Cammy Kline; siblings: Patricia Rexrode, Howard Slaven, Barbara Crist and Carol (Glenn) Lycans. He will also be missed by numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend a special, "Thank you", to neighbors Shelby Myers and Brian and Cathy McBroom. The wonderful people of Rose Lane Health Center and VNS Hospice are also thanked for the exceptional care they gave Bill over the last three years. Funeral Service FRIDAY 10:00 a.m. at the Swigart-Easterling Funeral Home, 624 E. Cherry St. (Rt. 93, Canal Fulton) with Rev. Dennis Woodruff officiating and where friends may call THURSDAY from 5-8 p.m. Burial with Military Honors by Firestone #3383 at Lakewood Cemetery, Akron. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials donations be made, in Bill's memory, to VNS Hospice, 3358 Ridgewood Road, Akron, OH 44333. "Later", Bill/Dad/Grandpa.
