Jason Cowling, 49, loving husband, son, brother, and friend passed away Tuesday, November 14, 2023, after a brief battle with cancer. Jason was born October 8, 1974, the third child of Judy and the late Larry Cowling. He lived in Clinton, graduating in 1993 from Northwest High School, where he met the love of his life, Shannon. Unfortunately, when he asked her out, she declined. Never one to give up, his quick-witted response was “Maybe later.” Little did he know “later” would be in 2009, when they met again and eventually married in August of 2011. His patience and persistence paid off.
Upon graduation from Hiram College, where he majored in English, he worked at various security and technical jobs, even writing the curriculum for a cybersecurity degree. Shortly after marriage, Jason realized his wife needed his support in more important, personal ways, so together they decided he would run the household, freeing Shannon to follow her career. His love of words and linguistics remained. He continued to write poetry, and, in an age of texting and email, he chose a more personal form of communication by writing Shannon love letters to express the depth of his love and the joy her presence brought to his life. Together, they purchased a historic church and renovated it into their dream home, with the hope of growing old there together.
Throughout his life, he was a fan of many sports and games, playing basketball and baseball at Northwest High School and collecting sports cards just for the joy of it. He also joined the Akron Canton Dart Club enjoying the friendship and camaraderie of competition. Combining his love of words and technology, he enjoyed listening to music and making electronic music.
While all of this tells a little about Jason Cowling, it only scratches the surface of the man he was. It is a rare thing in life to know someone who always puts others ahead of themselves, but that's the kind of guy he was. Those who loved him will speak of how passionate, funny, and easy-going he was and how he strived to live a simple, joyful life. Jason will be remembered as someone highly intelligent, athletic, selfless, loyal, and kind to loved ones and strangers alike. Although we here on Earth mourn our loss, heaven is a happier place with Jason in it.
Preceded in death by his father Larry Cowling, Jason is survived by his wife Shannon, and her daughters Katelin and Emily Mong, mother Judy Cowling, brother Russ Cowling, sister Jenny (Greg) Gregis, parents-in-law Bob and Elaine Hill, brother-in-law Brian (Janet) Hill, as well as 8 nieces and nephews, his best friend Aaron Vaughn, and 3 cats whom he adored. All are welcome to visit with Jason’s family on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Swigart-Easterling Funeral Home, 624 Cherry St. E. (Rt. 93) Canal Fulton, 44614. A Memorial Service will take place immediately following the visitation at 7 PM.
