John R. Tanksley “Tank”, 60 of Norton, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, June 11, 2023. He was born April 2, 1963 and spent the past 30 years teaching and coaching football across Summit and Stark County. John was currently a teacher at Norton High School and the head football coach for Akron Springfield. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. More than anything John was passionate about helping kids become the best version of themselves, not only on the field but also in life.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thadis Tanksley; grandparents, Russell and Harriet Douglas. John is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Denise; son, Corey Tanksley; stepsons, Philip Ferguson IV and Michael (Allison) Ferguson; grandchildren, Jett and Scarlett Ferguson; mother, Carol Tanksley; sisters, Bonnie (Chuck) Bertsch, Mouricia (Joe) Carbone and Tina (David) Figueroa; niece, Jessica Bertsch; nephews, Johnny (Randi) Bertsch, Nicholas Figueroa, Bailey Figueroa and Joseph Carbone; great-nephew, Lincoln Bertsch.
Visitation will be held FRIDAY, June 16, 2023, 4pm to 7pm at Grace Church Norton Campus, 3970 S. Cleveland-Massillon Rd., Norton. A Funeral Service will immediately follow at 7pm at the Norton High School Football Stadium with Greg Foote officiating. Private burial at Marlboro Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations are requested to Akron Springfield Football, 1880 Canton Rd., Akron, OH 44312.
