Valerie Jean McCann (Cunningham), age 75 of Portage Lakes, Ohio, passed away on March 3, 2024. She is survived by her children Dawn Schell and Charles (Stacie) Conto and her beloved granddaughters Alicia, Samantha, Skylar, and Emily. As well as her sisters, Debbie Guilbault and Beverly (David) Holmes. Along with nieces; Allison and Kelli, Nephews; Christopher, Max, and Matthew and Grand Niece Lizzy, who fondly called her Grauntie Val.
She was preceded in death by her parents Vincent and Alice Cunningham.
Raised in Avonmore, Pennsylvania she spent most of her adult life in the Portage Lakes area of Ohio. Valerie was a spirited woman and followed her heart, which led her to Mullin, Texas for fifteen years. She loved the beautiful weather, friendly people and wide-open spaces she encountered there. While living there she fought and won a courageous battle with breast cancer and proudly shared her experience with others.
Val was a 1966 graduate of Kiski Area High School and obtained her Associates degree in social work from Stark State College in 2000. Throughout her life, she mainly worked as a realtor, and did secretarial and administrative work.
She put very little value on the material things in life but valued her personal connections with family and friends, whom she loved dearly. Val was an avid reader, loved playing bingo, traveling, trying her luck at casinos, writing poetry, taking cruises, and her cherished pets, of which she had many over the years, including her beloved dog Minnie Pearl. Val never met a stranger, always had a kind word of encouragement, had a wonderful sense of humor, and saw the good in everyone.
